Why File Preparation Matters for UV Printing
UV printing delivers sharp, vibrant results — but only when your design files are set up correctly. Poorly prepared files lead to blurry edges, color shifts, and costly reprints. This guide walks you through exactly what our factory needs to produce perfect UV-printed products every time.
Accepted File Formats
Our UV printing process accepts the following file types:
- AI (Adobe Illustrator) — Preferred for vector artwork. Ensure all fonts are outlined and linked images are embedded.
- PDF — Export as PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4 with bleed marks included.
- PNG — Minimum 300 DPI at actual print size. Transparent background supported.
- PSD (Photoshop) — Flatten layers before sending, or keep layers if you need us to make adjustments.
Resolution Requirements
UV printing resolution requirements depend on the substrate and viewing distance:
- Acrylic signs and panels: 300 DPI minimum at 100% print size
- UV crystal labels: 600 DPI recommended for fine detail and small text
- Large-format prints (over 500mm): 150 DPI at actual size is acceptable
A common mistake is submitting a 72 DPI web image — this will print blurry. Always check your DPI at the actual output dimensions, not the screen preview size.
Color Mode: RGB vs CMYK
UV printers use CMYK ink sets, but our RIP software handles RGB-to-CMYK conversion automatically. We recommend:
- Submit files in RGB color mode for the most accurate color rendering on our UV printers
- If your brand uses Pantone colors, provide the Pantone reference numbers and we will match as closely as possible
- Avoid using pure black (R:0 G:0 B:0) for large solid areas — use rich black (C:60 M:40 Y:40 K:100) for deeper coverage
Bleed and Safe Zone
For any product with cut edges (acrylic signs, labels, stickers), include the following:
- Bleed: 2–3mm beyond the cut line on all sides
- Safe zone: Keep all important text and logos at least 3mm inside the cut line
- Cut line: Provide as a separate layer or spot color named "CutContour"
White Ink Layer for Transparent or Metallic Substrates
UV printing on clear acrylic, mirror acrylic, or metallic surfaces requires a white ink underbase. When submitting files for these substrates:
- Provide a separate white ink layer (or indicate which areas need white backing)
- If you want a frosted/translucent effect, specify "no white ink" for those areas
- Our team can add the white layer for you — just let us know your preference
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I send a JPEG file?
Yes, but only if it is at least 300 DPI at actual print size. JPEG compression can reduce edge sharpness, so PNG or PDF is preferred for logos and text.
What if my file is not the right size?
Send us the file at the closest size you have and specify the final output dimensions. We will scale it and confirm with you before printing.
Do you offer a file check service?
Yes. All orders include a free pre-press file check. We will flag any issues and send you a digital proof for approval before production begins.
How do I send large files?
Files under 20MB can be attached to your order email. For larger files, use WeTransfer, Google Drive, or Dropbox and share the link with us.
